Farewell to The Gauch

Feb 04, 2017

I'm sure you have read many of the accolades for Darren Gauci over the last few days. Such a talented rider, with a career spanning over 35 years including 35 Group 1 wins is no mean feat. He was involved in many a happy day for Alderson Racing as he rode many winners for us over the years. Today at Caulfield as he hangs up his boots he takes one last ride for us aboard MISS GIDGET in R6 the John Moule Handicap over 1100M. Caulfield has been a lucky track for Blondie and it seems to suit her. She has finished 2nd in the Blue Diamond prelude at the track and hopefully a bit of a gear change will see her improve today and all going well help give The Gauch a good send off.

We also have SMART DART running in the appropriately named last race on the card, the Darren Gauci Farewell Handicap. The horse is in fantastic form. It is an up in class, but as he keeps running well and his handicap increases, so too does the calibre of his opposition. It is an up in distance too pushing out to 1400m but I don't think this should be an issue. Ben Thompson who has partnered Smart Dart to three of his previous victories takes the ride.

On behalf of all the team at Alderson Racing, I would like to wish The Gauch all the best for his future endeavours. He will be a great asset for the Apprentice School and for the future apprentice jockeys to utilise the skills and knowledge he acquired over his long and successful career.
