Melbourne Cup Day at Cranbourne

Nov 07, 2017

It's the first Tuesday in November which can only mean one thing... Melbourne Cup Day is finally upon us!

Instead of battling the city traffic and worrying about mounting yard access for strappers, we have taken advantage of the great initiative by Cranbourne Turf Club and are heading across the road to the Melbourne Cup Day Races at Cranbourne.

The first of our 3 runners is a debutante Three Socks. Ridden by Ben Thompson, the 3yo gelding makes his first racecourse appearance out of barrier 8 in Race 2 - The Peter & Lavella DaRose - AFC Maiden Plate over 1300m. He has been working well at home but will definitely come on from some raceday experience as he is still learning his trade. Fit and in good order, we expect to see him finishing on strongly heading for the line.

Brutus Rex returns to the races today in Race 3 - The Heath Agistment BM58 Handicap on the back of a fruitful last campaign. Jamie Bates is in the saddle once again and knows the horse well. The trip of 1300m will be far short of Rex's ideal distance but will be a good starting point this prep.

We have a short break between races and a perfect chance to catch a look at the Melbourne Cup before our next runner Super Mario goes around in Race 6, the final race on the card. The Browns Sawdust & Shavings BM 58 over 2025m is an up in trip for Super Mario. Jamie Bates rides and having run a bold race to finish 2nd on his last outing at Kilmore, we are confident that he can go one better today.

However you are spending your Melbourne Cup Day, we wish you all a very enjoyable day and hope you get to experience all the great racing action that's on offer.
