Sale proves happy hunting ground for Del Palio

May 30, 2013

A return to one of his favourite tracks produced a win for Del Palio in the third heat of the TROA / Luxbet Winter Championship (1400m) at Sale.

Del Palio won his maiden at the track in March 2011 and finished third in Rating 62 company there in December of that year but had not raced at Sale in 18 months as his career took in races predominantly in the city.

Trainers Colin and Cindy Alderson set Del Palio for the Winter Championship Series after his third at Bendigo in March with a 1000-metre race at Sandown serving as a lead-up to his latest win.

The Aldersons engaged Stephen Baster to ride Del Palio in the $40,000 contest with the internationally successful jockey using all of his experience to get his mount home.

Baster took Del Palio back to third-last in the early stages but had to get the son of Invincible Spirit to settle while the front-runners set a slow speed for the firsthalf of the race.

Del Palio travelled better once the speed went on approaching the 600 metres but Baster still had the tough task of finding the best ground for the gelding on the slow track.

Baster sent Del Palio towards the outside fence where the five-year-old rattled home over the top of his opposition to score a soft win over the well-performed Cosentino and Cellarmaster.

Del Palio’s success was his fifth from 21 starts and the $24,000 winner’s cheque took his prizemoney tally through the $100,000 barrier.

Congratulations to Del Palio’s owners - Mrs L B Alderson, Mr W R Chitty.
