It is a nice spot to be in for trainer Cindy Alderson, saddling up two main chances in the Listed Galilee Series Final (2400m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
The top seed, Liqueuro, has won three of four career starts and will go around as short-priced favourite after an ultra-impressive Bendigo romp last start.
The surprise packet, Reuber, boasts a wildly inconsistent record, a win and three minor placings from nine career starts, despite regularly working better at home than his fancied stablemate.
The tricky part is splitting the two.
“To be honest with you, if it is on track work alone, you would want to back Reuber every time,” Alderson said.
“Liqueuro is probably one of the worst track workers I’ve had.
“He’s not lazy, it’s (track work) just not suited to his strengths, his strengths are build momentum and keep chugging along and you don’t really do that in track work, it’s more sit and sprint.”
Alderson will wait until after the Galilee Series Final to map out future plans for exciting Liqueuro, despite the progressive three year-old “hitting every mark we set for him”.
“He’s obviously got the nice progression to the St Leger if you wish to go that way, or even the South Australian Derby, so we have options there,” Alderson said.
“I have always said to everybody, including his ownership group, it is one race at a time with him.
“It’s only his first preparation and I know he’s only three year-old once … but if he shows he’s not ready to do anymore then we’ve got to think about the horse’s future.”
To complicate matters further, Reuber tossed young jockey Tom Stockdale after the finishing post at Bendigo last start when seventh.
Will the extra 200 metres on Saturday suit? It is a question not even Alderson is able to answer.
On face value, the run, albeit interrupted, had merit.
“It looks like he was unlucky, it looks like he was hitting the line, but nobody really knows,” Alderson said.
“I haven’t completely decided whether he (Reuber) runs a strong 2000m, 2400m or 2200m.
“I was hoping to get a guide at Bendigo but due to circumstances he was unable to get the run he needed.
“He did look like he hit the line because he was held up, whether or not he would’ve done that if he had free air all the way from the top of the straight, who knows?
“I’m hoping to get a really good guide on Saturday and know where he is going forward.”
